Winning Edge was created to build a football community where knowledge, experience, and mentorship can be shared with the next generation.
After decades of playing, studying, and coaching the game, we wanted to create a platform that gives back to football by helping athletes develop, supporting coaches in their craft, and educating fans who love the sport.
Winning Edge exists to share real football knowledge and lived experience so others can grow within the game.
Hardy Nickerson Sr.
Hardy Nickerson Sr., current Head Football Coach at J serra Catholic, brings a highly decorated background as both a professional football player and coach.
A native of Compton, California, he attended Verbum Dei Jesuit High School where he helped win two CIF championships. He went on to play at the University of California, Berkeley where he earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors.
Nickerson was selected in the 5th round of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played 16 seasons in the NFL with the Steelers, Buccaneers, Jaguars, and Packers.
His accomplishments include:
• 5× Pro Bowl selection
• 2× First Team All-Pro
• 2× Second Team All-Pro
• NFL 1990’s All-Decade Team
• NFL record holder for most combined tackles in a season (214)
After his playing career he coached with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers, and served as Defensive Coordinator at the University of Illinois.
He later returned to high school football as Head Coach at Bishop O’Dowd High School, where he led the Dragons to a CIF-NCS Championship, NorCal Regional Championship, and CIF State Championship.
Hardy Nickerson Jr. (H2)
Hardy Nickerson Jr. is currently the Defensive Coordinator at JSerra Catholic High School.
He previously served as linebackers coach at Palos Verdes High School and as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Bishop O’Dowd High School.
A graduate of Bishop O’Dowd High School, Hardy was an All-CIF and Semper Fidelis All-American linebacker before earning a scholarship to UC Berkeley, where he became a three-year starter, team captain, and All-Pac-12 linebacker.
He later completed his collegiate career at the University of Illinois, earning All-Big Ten honors and serving as team captain.
Hardy earned his degree in Legal Studies from UC Berkeley and later his Master’s degree in Sport Management from Illinois while playing five seasons in the NFL with the Bengals, Vikings, and Texans.
He brings leadership, experience, and a deep passion for developing young athletes.
Family Legacy
Football has been a part of the Nickerson family for generations.
From Hardy James Nickerson’s love for the game, to Hardy Nickerson Sr.’s historic NFL career, to Hardy Nickerson Jr.’s journey through college football, the NFL, and coaching — football has always been more than a sport for this family.
It is a legacy built on discipline, preparation, and respect for the game.
